As a ghost, I really have no background. Come to that I have no foreground either. Once upon a time, though, I did have background, and foreground and all around ground. I was a phenomenon. Famous? – I couldn’t possibly comment that’s for others to say. And they did in their thousands. My beautiful, kind, generous public, they sustained me.
I trod the boards, as they used to say. No not an actor, I was an entertainer. I made people happy. Laughter was their medicine and I gave it to them in, bucketfuls. Even my death scene, totally unscripted I hasten to add, left them laughing. There I was coming to my grand finale, ending my little dance back to centre stage, when the trap door burst beneath my feet and I disappeared before their eyes.
They of course thought it was a fantastic climax and it brought the house down. As for me, I broke my neck and died instantly to tumultuous applause and laughter. People rushed to help, but I was gone. As my body hit the floor, I knew it, so I left it, my body I mean, and floated up to take a final bow. How strange, they were on their feet laughing, clapping, and cheering for me If I hadn’t just died, it would have ‘done my heart good.’
I hovered over the stage, beaming down upon them and soaking up all that energy. I still do, it’s what keeps me going!
