Helping raise money for cancer research

Anne Hammond

I’m closer to seventy than sixty, married, with two wonderful grown-up daughters and live in Hervey Bay, Queensland, on the east coast of Australia.

It’s a long way from Newport, South Wales, where I was born and spent my first eighteen years. After obtaining a Foreign Correspondent’s diploma in Bradford, Yorkshire, I worked in London for three years and Paris for five, before traveling to Australia in 1981 for a friend’s wedding. My one-year working holiday began in Sydney and moved to Darwin, where I joined the public service and we bought a house.

Thirty-three years later, my husband and I retired, spent six months with a camping trailer exploring parts of the country we hadn’t seen before and finally reached Hervey Bay in January 2018. It was supposed to be a base for further travel but during 2020’s pandemic, Hervey Bay with its lovely climate and beautiful beach, became a haven during the lockdown.

I’ve always enjoyed writing, though far too much of it was work-related. When we settled here, I signed up for a U3A writing group in a bid to write more and, perhaps, better. I don’t think I will ever write the great novel, but at least I’ve managed a few short stories, some based on real events, others purely on imagination.
