I was born in 1929 to a poor working-class family in the East End of London. One of 4 children, it was a tough environment in which to grow up, but one that taught me many valuable lessons.
I left school at 14 and worked as a machinist in a clothing factory. But over the early years, I also worked in retail - selling menswear, and even groceries from a market stall. I liked selling and I was good at it. In 1951 I met Georgina - the love of my life and married her.
In 1960 I got a job as a salesman with an international company and won salesman of the year. After winning that title three years running I was promoted to sales manager. The following year I was offered the chance to revive a failing subsidiary company. I was successful, turning a loss of £19,000 per year, into a profit of £19.000 in that first year.
After a couple of years, the original American owners of the business - seeing that it was profitable year after year - bought the business back. They offered me a 25% shared ownership in the company, on condition that I stayed on and ran the company. I did so and the company enjoyed international success in the fashion industry. Many years later, I bought the Americans out, and eventually sold the company and retired.
Travelling the world has always been a passion for me. Both during me business life and retirement, I have travelled widely and many of my experiences are written about in my stories.
My lovely wife and I have four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I love to cook and read about current events.
