A true story.
My next door neighbours had just moved out from their small house in the East End of London, and my wife and I were waiting to see what the new people would be like. After a couple of days, the new people arrived. It turned out to be the local tearaway, called Eddie Mackie, with his latest lady friend, Stella, in full sail (pregnant).
Eddie was already a married man, with a pregnant wife, who, it turns out, he had abandoned, to take up with his new interest. The two women were only a month or so apart with their due dates, and they only lived a few hundred yards away from each other.
The two women were worlds apart in character. The tearaway’s wife, Josie, was an absolute lady with impeccable taste and beautiful manners, not to mention the fact that she was an incredibly beautiful woman. On the other hand, Stella, his new fancy woman, was the complete opposite. She was a loudmouth, extremely common, gin soak, that would stay at the bar counter until her legs wouldn't hold her up any longer.
Within the next few months, both women gave birth to little girls, who were to grow up in totally different environments. On the one hand, the abandoned wife, Josie, would be teaching her child to respect everyone and help people wherever she could. Her style and manor was impeccable, a kid anyone would be proud of. the Gin Queen Stella only ever taught her daughter how to hate men, because Eddie would never divorce his wife to marry her. This attitude was a perfect recipe for a completely destructive relationship.
When the two girls reached their late teens, Josie, Eddie’s legitimate daughter, was all for outdoor sports, keep fit classes, and ballroom dancing, whereas, Lisa, the illegitimate child, was a regular early drinker, who was more at home in a pub or a cocktail bar, plus the fact that she was getting a reputation as not being very choosey with her choice of dates or partners.
By the strangest of coincidences, the girls started dating two brothers, Jake and Peter that funnily enough had completely different ideas of what made a good night out. Jake was the one who liked the idea of "The Demon Drink" as a good night out, so there's no prize for guessing which girl he was sweet on. It had to be, Lisa, that girl did like a drink.
The couples had been dating for over a year, without ever attempting to make up a foursome, but it was inevitable, that at some time soon, the fact that the girls had the same father would come out. Eventually, during an open discussion, all four of them accepted that the situation they found themselves in was, to say the least, unusual. If they were to contemplate a joint wedding plan, they would undoubtedly be asking for trouble, as everybody that would be involved just hated the very idea that Eddie would make himself the star of the show, which would inevitably lead to serious trouble, which is the last thing you need at a wedding celebration.
To try to keep things as fair as possible, the girls made the decision to have a Register Office wedding, without any guests at all. The plan worked out very successfully indeed; they had made the best of a possible dangerous situation.
Over the next few years both couples had worked extremely hard to make a success of their marriage, and were able to enjoy a pretty close friendship, until Lisa and Jake made the decision to make new life for themselves in Toronto, Canada. In the meantime, Josie and Peter had also made a decision to start a new life in Melbourne, Australia.
I can tell you that both couples made a very nice life for themselves In their adopted countries.
